Project Details

The Townsville Northern Access Intersections Upgrade is a major infrastructure project designed to improve safety and travel times for both freight and passenger transport on the Bruce Highway north of Townsville.

BMD Constructions was engaged by the Department of Transport and Main Roads to duplicate 5.2 kilometres of the Bruce Highway at Black River, between Veales Road and Pope Road. The scope of works includes duplication of the Black River Bridge and associated highway infrastructure.

Hawthorne Civil was engaged by BMD Constructions to deliver the drainage construction works for the project. Our scope included the concrete construction of 43 reinforced concrete box culvert (RCBC) drainage structures and nine reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) culverts, with the placement of more than 1,700 cubic metres of reinforced concrete into base slabs and headwalls. Works also involved the installation of approximately 1,300 RCBC units, requiring detailed planning and coordination to maintain program efficiency.

The project demonstrates Hawthorne Civil’s capability to deliver large-scale drainage infrastructure works within major highway upgrade projects, supporting improved safety and performance across critical transport corridors.
